The United Pan Africanist Movement Press Statement on the unfolding political unrest in Ethiopia.
We note with concern the unfolding political unrest in Ethiopia, leading to the displacement of thousands and hundreds massacred, following the altercation between the Federal and provincial government of Tigray.
We are disturbed by the massacre of hundreds of non-combatant civilians, noting that it constitutes a serious crime against humanity.
Thousands have been displaced including women and children, putting a strain on the already suffering population.
We urge the nearby countries to open their borders in order to accommodate the at risk people of Ethiopia.
We appeal to humanitarian missions to immediately intervene and provide the much needed food, clothing and medication for the vulnerable population, including pregnant women, children and the old.
We advise that, disagreements over political principles and constitutional questions should not have degenerated into outright violence and bloodshed.
We re-iterate the need for the parties involved to exercise restraint to save civilian lives and work towards a comprehensive national dialogue for the attainment of sustainable peace and stability.
We advise the parties involved to refer to the dictates of the country’s constitution and desist from solving disagreements through guns.
We ccall for the immediate cessation of hostilities by the parties involved in order to save lives, and to work towards the promotion of sustainable peace.
We further urge the African Union, and East African block to support efforts towards peaceful engagement between the federal and provincial government.
